Our goals for this course are to promote knowledge of haematology as required by general physicians, and assist in the FRACP written exam preparation for BPTs. With this in mind we will cover the following topics in the course:

  • Lymphomas
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)
  • Myelodysplasia (MDS)
  • Myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) including Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)
  • Autograft/allograft basics
  • Haematological emergencies
  • Transfusion basics
  • Thalassaemia/haemoglobinopathy
  • Bone marrow failure syndromes/aplastic anaemia
  • Interpretation of FBE/film basics
  • Evaluation of common FBE abnormalities eg cytopenias, thrombocytosis, polycythemia

Thrombosis and haemostasis

  • Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
  • Anticoagulant management
  • ITP – Immune thrombocytopenia
  • TTP – Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
  • HITS – Heparin induced thrombocytopenia
  • vWD/haemophilia basics
  • Coagulation test interpretation
  • Bleeding diagnoses
